Nando's 'Changing Lives' art initiative
Nando’s was founded in 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa, which remains the cultural heartbeat of the brand. The Art in the restaurants is an expression of this culture. By exhibiting original art from Southern Africa around the world, we believe that we help democratising art by allowing anyone visiting our Casas (restaurants) to enjoy them, while telling the story of our beginnings.
One of the ways in which Nando’s celebrate our roots is by uniquely displaying original art from Southern Africa in all our Casa’s (1 200 around the world). There are now more than 25,000 pieces on display across five continents. The Nando’s Collection is considered the largest body of contemporary Southern African art that is publicly displayed in the world and it’s accessible to millions every day.
To facilitate this, Nando’s started building an art collection through a partnership with Spier Arts Trust in 2004. Over two decades, we have pioneered investment into Southern African art market while providing more than 350 artists with career development support and mentorship.
By allowing artists to focus full-time on their artistic careers with the potential to earn a regular income, Nando’s is making a difference in people’s lives while at the same time growing their body of high quality Southern African contemporary art.
By sharing the artists’ stories, we are sharing our story. By showcasing the artists’ work globally in our restaurants, we are sharing our African roots with the rest of the world, from England, Texas, Australia to Malaysia and Mauritius.
NANDO'S MAURITIUS
ART COMPETITION
The Nando’s ‘Changing Life’ art initiative has finally reached our shores! Nando’s Mauritius has partnered with Spier Arts Trust to launch the “Feed your creativity’ art competition to mark the re-opening of Nando’s Bagatelle Casa. Each Casa (aka ‘restaurant’) is a unique work of art! Indeed, all Nando’s restaurants around the world are unique.
A portal to the World
Each Nando’s restaurant has its own unique design, but they all have earthy textures and colours reminiscent of our Afro-Portuguese roots, and feature original, African art and unique design touches. Every décor element has been specifically designed and hand-picked from up-and-coming Sub-Saharan African designers via Nando’s own Sourcing Hub ‘Portal to Africa’– an online marketplace which connects designers and artists with Nando’s global interior design teams.
